The Customer Database

1. Determine the appropriate technology

The first step is to determine the technology they use to create and manage our customer database.

The choice of this technology will depend on several factors ranging from the size of our company, the rotation of our business, our resources, to the type of audience that we are headed.

Depending on these factors, we can use user-friendly programs such as Excel or Access to more complex programs which may be necessary to hire a professional to be responsible for implementing them.

2. Determine the required information

Second, we must determine what information or data that we require of our customers.

Customer data should always strive to ensure are your name and contact details, such as your physical address, email address, landline and cell phone.

Other information we might strive for is your birthday, and data on purchasing behavior, such as the products we have purchased and how often they buy or visit often.

And other more qualitative data that could attempt to get to get a better idea of the profile of our customers are your school, workplace, hobbies (if you travel, if you do sports, if you read magazines, etc.).

3. The method of data collection

Thirdly we proceed to determine the method or methods to use to obtain information or customer data.

One way to get data from the client is attempting to do it directly, for example, ask that you please give us your data to send then our promotions.

Although due to the reluctance on the client may have to give us your data, another way to get them is attempting to do indirectly, for example, ask your data when you purchase our services, or by inviting them to participate in sweepstakes where to participate have to fill out coupons with their data.

And another way to get customer data is using partnerships with other complementary to ours, that also address the same audience to which we address ourselves.

4. Using database

Once we have our database, we move to take advantage of it.

As mentioned above, the database allows us to maintain communication with our customers (and all the advantages that this represents), to know the means by which we can make contact with them.

Another use of a database is that we can know which are our main customers, and thus, for example, can provide an excellent service and preferential treatment (that is, if these customers represent a large percentage of our sales).

And another utility is that we can meet each customer’s specific, and thus, for example, able to offer a personalized service or, for example, if a customer we always buy a certain product, we may choose to offer complementary products or promotions that might be of interest.

5. Update database

Finally, we constantly update our database.

Stop updating our database could be costly, for example, if we do not update the address of a client may send advertising material costly (eg, catalogs printed with high quality) to a direction in which the client no longer lives which we were going.

To update data we simply use the same methods we use the time to get customer data, but may also be necessary to track and record the purchase of this behavior.
